Privacy Policy

Remark is built around a simple principle: your data stays on your Mac. This policy explains exactly what information we handle and what we do not.

What we collect

If you opt in to crash reports

Crash reports are optional and off by default. If enabled, a report contains:

  • Error type (e.g., "EXC_BAD_ACCESS")
  • macOS version (e.g., "26.3.1")
  • Remark version (e.g., "0.8.0")
  • Stack trace (technical error location — no user content)

Sparkle update checks

Remark uses Sparkle to check for new versions. This sends a standard HTTP request to fetch a public XML file.

  • App version (to determine if an update is available)
  • No device identifiers, no usage data

Model downloads

On first use, Remark downloads speech recognition models from the model provider's servers. After download, all processing is local. No user data is sent during this download.

Paddle (if you subscribe to Pro)

Payment information is collected and processed by Paddle.com as our Merchant of Record. Paddle's privacy policy applies to payment data.

We receive: subscription status and license key. No payment card details.

What we do not collect — ever

  • Audio recordings
  • Transcribed text
  • Meeting content
  • Dictation content
  • Speaker identities
  • Browsing or usage patterns
  • Device identifiers
  • Location data
  • Contact information (unless you email us)

Data storage

  • All transcriptions, recordings, and meeting data are stored locally on your Mac
  • Default retention: 7 days (configurable in Settings)
  • "Delete All Data" button in Settings permanently removes all data stored within Remark. Files you've exported to external folders (via auto-export) are not affected.
  • No cloud storage, no server-side backups

Third parties

  • Paddle — payment processing only (Merchant of Record)
  • Sparkle — update checking only (fetches a public XML file)
  • No analytics providers, no tracking SDKs, no telemetry

Your rights

  • Crash reports: disable anytime in Settings → Data & Privacy
  • Delete all data: Settings → Data & Privacy → Delete All Data
  • Contact: [email protected]

Changes

We may update this policy. Changes will be noted in the app's changelog.

Last updated: April 2026.
